Matvey Demin (Flute)

Matvey Demin was born in 1993. His first flute lessons were with his grandmother Galina Bulgakova at the age of 9. In 2004 he continued his studies at the Novosibirsk Specialized Music School (class of Nadezhda Furenkova). In 2009 Matvey Demin entered the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hannover (class of Andrea Lieberknecht) and since 2012 he has been studying under Andrea Lieberknecht at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München. Throughout his career Matvey Demin has won numerous competitions, such as the 1st Prize at the International Friedrich Kuhlau Flute Competition in Uelzen (2013), a special prize at the ARD Music Competition in Munich (2010) and the 2nd Prize at the Deutscher Hochschulwettbewerb in Berlin (2012). Also he is a prize-winner at the BJIMC International Competition in Beijing (2012), the International Flute Competition in Krakow (2014). At the UNISA International Competition for Flute and Clarinet in Pretoria (2014) Matvey Demin has won the 1st prize, as well as three special prizes including an invitation to perform with the Simon Bolivar Orchestra in Venezuela. Most recently, Matvey Demin has won the 2nd prize and the audience prize at the International Aeolus Winds Competition in Düsseldorf (2017). In 2019 he won 1st prize and the Gold Medal at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. 

Matvey Demin had been a solo-flutist at the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester and the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra before he became a co-principal solo-flutist at the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich at the age of 20. Since the 2014–15 season he has been collaborating with such conductors as Bernard Haitink, David Zinman, Herbert Blomstedt, Franz Welser-Möst, Giovanni Antonini and Paavo Jarvi among others. Matvey Demin is very active at the chamber music scene. He has performed at the Davos Festival (Switzerland), the Emilia Romagna Festival (Italy) and the Samos Young Artists Festival (Greece). In 2018 he participated in the International Molyvos Festival in Greece.
