Johan HERMANS (Organist)

Johan Hermans teaches Organ Performance, Chamber Music and Keyboard Harmony at the Music Conservatory of Hasselt, Belgium. He has been the titular organist of the historically-acclaimed Cavaille-Coll organ at the Provincial Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart Church in the same city until October 2006, when he was appointed Cathedral Organist of the St. Quintinus Cathedral. Besides, he also serves as City Organist of Hasselt . He is founder of the International Organ Festival of Hasselt and is Artistic Director of the several organ concert series in and around the city of Hasselt.
Mr. Hermans studied at the Lemmens Institute in Louvain and at the Royal Conservatory of Liege, both in Belgium. He was awarded a Master’s degree in organ and completed his education with a thesis on “Rhetoric and Affect in the music of J.S. Bach” and the “Diplome Superieur” (the equivalent of a “Doctor of Musical Arts” or “Prix d’Excellence”) in Organ Performance. He was granted scholarships from both the Flemish and the French community of his country to attend international master classes in France, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and Italy.

In demand as solo artist and lecturer, Mr. Hermans has traveled throughout Europe, Brazil, the British Islands, the USA, Uruguay, Russia and Japan. He has played inaugural recitals of new instruments and has given lectures and master classes at Universities around the globe. He has recordings to his credit for Belgian, Dutch, German, Latvian, Austrian, Polish and Canadian Broadcasting Corporations and has made recordings on several CD labels – receiving notable recognition for his work.

During the forthcoming concert season, Mr. Hermans will perform recitals as organ soloist at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, the Kaiser Dom in Frankfurt, St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh, Scotland and at several venues in the U.S.

In April 2005 he was honored by the Academic Society of “Arts - Sciences – Lettres” of Paris.
