DenisMatsuev: It
wasawonderful initiative onbehalf ofValery Gergiev and
theMariinsky Theatre to establish afestival with such
awonderful and subtle name asContemporary Piano Faces inorder
to come together and present audiences with utterly different piano schools from
all over theworld.
Ofcourse, it isimportant to understand
that theSoviet (Russian) piano school is, inmy opinion,
thebest; first and foremost, it brought to life theart
ofsinging onthepiano, it existed
intheclosed USSR inakind ofdetached manner.
Today young pianists have theopportunity to take master classes and change
their teachers. And so thevarious piano schools, including
theRussian one, have mixed together. And I believe theres something
positive about that.
At theContemporary Piano Faces festival you will
beable to see different generations and different schools. That
isjust great, because piano music istremendously popular throughout
theworld.
Valery Gergievhasstated that
thefestivals task isto invite musicians to St Petersburg who have
already woninternational acclaim but who are, asyet, less well known
inRussiaand to introduce new names and clear thepath
foryoung talents aswell asto popularise piano music.
