The XVIII International Ballet Festival Mariinsky
The XVIII International Ballet Festival Mariinsky will open with the Russian premiere of Push Сomes to Shove, which Twyla Tharp created for Mikhail Baryshnikov in 1976. The humorous production staged by the prolific modern dance choreographer for the star of classical ballet will feature the Mariinsky Theatre’s principal dancers.
The Mariinsky’s Creative Workshop of Young Choreographers brings on board new participants this year: Alexander Sergeev and Vladimir Shklyarov, two favorites with the public, will try their hand at choreography. Shklyarov will also appear in their joint work with Alexander Chelidze. Yuri Smekalov and Ilya Zhivoi, whose works are already featured in the Mariinsky Theatre’s repertoire, will present their new works, as well as Dmitry Pimonov, who took part in the Creative Workshop last year. The project is truly international thanks to the participation of Melanie Hamrick, who will present her work set to Mick Jagger’s music and performed by the American Ballet Theatre dancers.
As tradition goes, the festival’s playbill is graced with the names of guest stars. Repertoire productions and the closing gala with feature the Mariinsky Theatre performers as well as Natalia Osipova, Lauren Cuthbertson, Olga Smirnova, Maria Alexandrova, and Vladislav Lantratov.
