The Diary of Anne Frankáis aámonodramaáin 21 scenes forásopranoáandáchamber orchestra, composed in 1968 and first performed in 1972. The music andálibrettoáare byáGrigory Frid, after theáeponymous diary.

Grigory Samuilovich Frid (1915ľ2012) lived aálong life, actively working as aácomposer, painter, publicist-writer, author and manager of educational projects, amongst which theámost important was theáMusical Youth Club (known simply as Frid's club) of theáMoscow Union of Composers. Many know his name from their childhood and from theácover of theápopular bookáMusic! Music? Music... and Youth.

His legacy, ináaddition to symphony and chamber works, includes two mono-operas, both onáa "Dutch" theme: Letters of van Gogh andáTheáDiary of Anne Frank. Theálatter was written by theáJewish composer after theádiary of theáJewish girl who became one of theámost famous victims of theáHolocaust inátheáWestáľ during theáyears of stagnation under Brezhnev and State anti-semitism inátheáUSSR its fate was to be rather different. Apropos, as theácomposer himself recalled when he wrote TheáDiary iná1969, he had no hopes that theáopera would be staged inátheáSoviet Unionáľ theáliterary source had been published ináRussian only thirteen years after its first publication ináEurope, while inátheálate 1960s came aácessation of Soviet-Israeli diplomatic relations and theáwholesale repatriation of Jews from theáSoviet Union.

First performed (with piano accompaniment) by theásinger Nadezhda Yurieva iná1972 at theáMoscow House of Composers, inátheáUSSRáTheáDiary of Anne Frankáwas only sung ináconcert ináKislovodsk and Sverdlovsk, and staged as an opera ináVoronezh and Chișinău. However, theáopera won unusual popularity inátheáUSA, became firmly established inátheárepertoires of theatres and concert halls ináGermany and was staged ináAustria, Sweden, Ireland, Czechoslovakia, Slovenia and TheáNetherlands. This season there will be premieres of theámono-opera inácities ináSwitzerland and Germany. When theácomposer first read theáthirteen-year-old girl's diary he was amazed, and soon, he recalled, "came theáidea that he had to write an opera based onáthis opus. Because it was already aáfinished libretto! Although how can you say finished? of theátwo hundred and thirty pages I had to come up with twelve or thirteen." Moreover, theácomposer did not change aásingle word inátheádocument, merely condensing it into tewnty-one short episodes grouped into four scenes. Theámusic, following theáspontaneousáľ almost "childish"áľ text conveys theáheroine's emotional states, from joy to despair, her free spirit and moral strength and even her teenage humour. Theádiary also contains deep thoughts inátheáspirit of aánovel about growing up, reflections onátheáfirst emergent romantic feelings and vivid, grotesque sketches "from life". Theámusic of theámono-opera embodied not only internal psychological suffering but also echoes of surrounding life itself ("Westertoren") and "portraits" of theáneighbours also forced into confinement (her father, mother, sister, Peter and Mr and Mrs van Daan) and sound landscapes.

The literaryáDiary of Anne Frankáhas been translated into sixty-five (!) languages. Since its first publication there have been over thiry-five million copies produced. A play based onátheádiary won theáPulitzer Prize and it has been screened several times. Grigory Frid's opera has been theáfirst musical treatment of theáplot and theáonly one ináopera.á

The 13-year-old Anne Frank is hiding with her family in a house in Amsterdam from July 1942 until their arrest in August 1944. She describes the people she sees, her different moods, and her emotions in her diary, telling of her pleasure at a birthday gift, or the sight of blue sky from her window, or her awakening attraction for Peter, but also her fear and loneliness.
