Zhanna Afanasieva (Soprano)

• Prize-winner and recipient of the special prize at the International Antonín Dvořák Competition (Karlovy Vary, 2002, 2nd prize)
• Prize-winner at the International Antonín Dvořák Competition in two categories – “Opera” and “Chamber Singing” (Karlovy Vary, 2001, 3rd prize)
• Recipient of the special prize for performing Rusalka’s aria from Antonín Dvořák’s opera Rusalka at the International Antonín Dvořák Competition (2001)

Zhanna Afanasieva was born in St Petersburg. In 2004 she graduated from the St Petersburg State Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatoire (class of Svetlana Gorenkova).
From 2004 to 2008, she was a soloist with the Zazerkalye State Children’s Musical Theatre.
From 2005, she was a guest soloist with the Tatar Academic State Musa Jalil Theatre of Opera and Ballet (Tatarstan).
Since 2008 she has been a soloist with the St Petersburg Chamber Opera Company.

At the St Petersburg Conservatoire Opera and Ballet Theatre, Zhanna Afanasieva has performed the roles of the Countess (Le nozze di Figaro), Marguerite (Faust) and Tatiana (Eugene Onegin); at the Prague State Opera and the Karlovy Vary Theatre she has appeared as Helen (An Odious Love by O. Mach); at the  Zazerkalye theatre as Iolanta (Iolanta), Pamina (Die Zauberflöte), Giulietta (Les Contes d’Hoffmann), Mimì (La Bohème) and Bess (Porgy and Bess); at the Tatar Theatre of Opera and Ballet as Elvira (Don Giovanni) and the First Lady (Die Zauberflöte); at the St Petersburg Chamber Opera Company as Cio-Cio San (Madama Butterfly), Suor Angelica (Suor Angelica), Tatiana (Eugene Onegin) and Elvira (Don Giovanni).
Moreover, the singer’s repertoire includes the roles of Leonora (Il trovatore), Amelia (Un ballo in maschera), Aida (Aida), Micaëla (Carmen), Santuzza (Cavalleria rusticana), Nedda (I pagliacci), Zemfira (Aleko), Lauretta (Gianni Schicchi), Antonia (Les Contes d’Hoffmann), Liza (The Queen of Spades) and Tosca (Tosca), as well as the soprano roles in Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, Mozart’s Requiem, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Verdi’s Requiem, Dvořák’s Stabat Mater and Rachmaninoff’s poetic choral symphony The Bells.

Roles performed at the Mariinsky Theatre include:
Katerina Ivanovna (The Brothers Karamazov)
Emilia Marty (The Makropulos Affair)

Zhanna Afanasieva has toured with vocal ensembles to countries including Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland. She has toured with the Tatar Opera Theatre to the Netherlands.
